The Parkside Story
Robert and Eliza Parks arrived in Melbourne from Somerset, England in 1860. Upon embarking from their ship, they immediately set off to their newly purchased property in Rochford where a two roomed, timber house had been built amongst 160 acres of bush and trees.
Using timber from the farm, the property was fenced, barns and stables were built. To the credit of these early pioneers, two of these original buildings still stand at Parkside – the grain barn and Clydesdale barn which is now our Cellar Door. Parkside became one of the most productive and well know farms in the region over generations growing potatoes, peas, oats, wheat and breeding champion Clydesdale horses.
A New House is Built
In 1890 the prominent local builder Mr C Colliver was engaged to build a new, three room house using locally made red bricks. The house featured marble fireplaces, delicate stained glass, and ornate lattice work on a wraparound veranda. The garden was also “landscaped” to include a bowling green and enhanced plantings of fruit trees and flowering displays. This house is still the main residence at Parkside today.
Driven by passion, diligence and craftsmanship with distinction, forty years after their arrival Robert and Eliza had transformed Parkside into a landmark property known for its elegance, entertainment and welcoming atmosphere.
Traditions Continue
In 2008 Darryl and Jenny Ward became the proud custodians of this historical, landmark property. The homestead has been restored and the original barns and stables are gradually being returned to their former glory.
The vineyard which was planted in the late 1990's now produces outstanding cool climate wines with the Cellar Door opening for the Macedon Ranges Wine Festival in 2017
It is our vision that Parkside becomes a renowned destination of choice where visitors can taste our handcrafted wines, experience the stories that are captured in our vintages, but most of all enjoy the inviting country location and hospitality that is Parkside.
